In the About Rotary pages of this website we describe the Paul Harris Fellowship. In simple terms it is Rotary's recognition of individual Rotarians who sustain the Rotary Foundation's good work by making a minimum donation to it of $1000 USD.
In nine years the Rotary Club of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, will celebrate its 100th Birthday. To mark this important milestone Club President Bob Moffatt and the Club's Board of Directors have set the goal that By Our Centennial All Club Members Should Be Paul Harris Fellows. When this worthy and attainable goal happens we will be one of very few clubs in the world to show this level of commitment to the Foundation. Currently there are just five clubs in Canada where all members are Paul Harris Fellows. Achieving this goal will make our Club's Centennial all that much more special. It will be an achievement we can be very proud of and it will help set the stage for our next 100 years of service!
To help make this goal happen our Board of Directors have proposed that the Club will encourage members not already Paul Harris Fellows to become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members (formerly called a Paul Harris Sustaining Members). Any person can be recognised as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member who makes, or in whose honour is made, an initial contribution to The Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund of $100 USD, or more. This person makes a stated intention of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow within 10 years by donating the balance of the required contribution during that period. As part of that encouragement, our Board of Directors has decided to offer matching funds to members who make their first $100 USD commitment to become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members. Our Club already makes donations to the Foundation. The idea of the matching funds initiative is to leverage that existing donation by bringing on board new Sustaining Members. By leveraging the Clubs existing commitments to the Foundation in this way, ultimately the Foundation will receive more support.
The Rotary Club of Charlottetown's Annual Foundation Dinner & Auction took place on May 10th, 2008, at The Culinary Institute. The event is our Club's major fundraiser for The Rotary Foundation. This year $4,500 was raised for the Foundation - about one thousand more than last year! Everyone in attendance had a great meal & some great Rotary fellowship. Some went home with some great auction items. It was also clear that when Dale Turner quits his day job he can grab a gavel and become a professional auctioneer. It seems he was born to the job. His assistant 'Vanna' did a great job too! Our club gives thanks to all the committee who pulled off such a successful event. And last but not least, thanks to all those who donated auction items!
